Elk River Tire & Auto

With many auto shops offering oil change coupons, an oil change every 3,000 miles is more affordable than ever. However, the old adage of the 3,000-mile interval is no longer mandatory. There is a lot of contradictory information about engine oil, what type to use and how often to change it. Many auto technicians will agree that today's cars should have oil changes at the recommended intervals as stated in their owner's manual or when the car's "oil change" light appears. With the combination of recent advancements in engine technology and oil chemistry, the recommended interval has lengthened considerably. That interval could be anywhere between 5,000 to 15,000 miles, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. Be sure to check your owner's manual.

True or False? Should You Have an Oil Change Before a Long Road Trip?

The answer is both true and false! Make sure you have the various systems of your car inspected before a long trip so that you don't experience any unexpected breakdowns while on the road. If the timing of an oil change won't come up during your trip, don't worry about having a service before you leave. However, if the time for a service will come up while on your trip, have it taken care of before heading down the road.

Caution: Any serious maintenance or repair work done just before a long trip is a little risky. For example, assume you have an oil change service the day before you leave town. Unknowing to you, the drain plug was not tightened properly and the vibration of the road loosens it. You end up leaving a trail of oil down the road and you have to stop for an unscheduled oil change service.

To be on the safe side, schedule a service at least a week before a long trip to make sure that all the systems of your vehicle are working properly.
