Shocks (called car struts in some vehicles), wear down slowly over time as the miles add up. Like all other automobile parts and systems, shocks and struts have a specific maintenance schedule. Auto repair experts say that generally they should be replaced between every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on how much wear and tear they have received.

What keeps your vehicle balanced and connected to the road? It’s the shocks or car struts! All the different components that make up the steering and suspension systems play a big role in keeping your ride smooth and safe. They also . . .

  • Help maintain consistent handling and braking
  • Keep your tires in contact with the road
  • Control spring and suspension movements
  • Reduce vehicle roll, bounce, sway, brake dive and acceleration squat
  • Prolong the life of other parts in the suspension
  • Prevent gradual deterioration of ride quality
Wondering how often do you need to replace shocks? Ask your auto repair technician for advice about car struts and shocks if you’re having steering problems.

You’re on your way to work, running late when all of a sudden the “Check Engine” light illuminates on your dashboard.  Should you drive straight to your auto repair shop or can you go on to work?  Do you need to pull over and call a tow truck?  First of all, don’t panic!  There are several reasons the check engine light may be triggered.

What could cause the check engine light to come on, you ask?  It could just be a loose gas cap. A loose, cracked, or faulty gas cap can cause fuel to evaporate, thus causing your check engine light to come on  So pull over (as soon as it’s safe) and make sure your gas cap is on tight. If this was indeed the trigger, your check engine light should go off within 10 or 20 miles once you’re back on the road.

Wondering what could cause the check engine light to come on? Schedule an engine service at Elk River Tire & Auto for a diagnostic test.
