Elk River Tire & Auto

Gearing up for that long-awaited-for summer road trip? To ensure you have smooth driving ahead, visit your preferred auto shop for regular vehicle maintenance, including an engine service. This is a chance to prevent a major engine rebuild or repair by taking care of your engine on a regular basis. As you know, hot weather makes existing problems worse. The last thing you want to experience on your summer vacation is a breakdown, resulting in a costly engine repair

For smooth summer traveling, Follow this Road Map For Vehicle Maintenance:

  1. Read your owner's manual Know the recommended service schedules, including engine rebuild.
  2. Engine Service Replace dirty filters air, fuel, PCV, etc. Take care of any engine problems (such as hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.).
  3. Oil -- Change the oil and filter as specified in your manual, especially before an extended road trip. For stop-and-go driving, consisting mainly of frequent short trips, oil change is recommended about every 3,000 miles.
  4. Tires Make sure the tires have the correct amount of air pressure and that the tread is sufficient for driving on hot roads. Do the tires need to be rotated? Remember to check the spare, and be sure the jack is in the trunk.
  5. Windshield Wipers Replace old wiper blades and stock up on windshield washer solvent. Be prepared for those sudden summer rain storms.
  6. Battery Hot weather kills batteries. Ask your professional mechanic to check the charging power of your battery, clean corrosion from posts and cable connections; retighten connections, and check the fluid level.
  7. Lights Make sure all lights (outside and inside) are working. Make sure the lenses are free of old road grime.
  8. Exhaust System Inspect for exhaust leaks in the muffler, as well as the trunk and floorboards.
  9. Cooling System Have the level and condition of the coolant checked and flushed and refilled as necessary. Inspect the tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses.
  10. Emergencies -- Carry a first-aid kit, blanket, flares, snacks, water, and a cell phone.
