Elk River Tire & Auto

So that you’re ready for the hot temperatures of summer it is important that you take care of any basic car maintenance items that need to be done. Not only should you know what the car maintenance schedule includes that is listed in your owner’s manual, schedule a thorough inspection of your vehicle, especially before heading out on a summer road trip. This inspection will indicate if there are any pending problems that should be fixed as soon as possible.

So what does vehicle maintenance consist of to see you through summer? The car maintenance items listed below are vital for driving as safe as possible any time of year:

  • Battery—Check the fluid level and clean any corrosion away from the posts and cable connections. Make sure it is holding a strong charge for the hot temperatures ahead.
  • Wiper Blades—If you notice streaks across the glass, replace the blades so you are prepared for those sudden summer rainstorms.
  • Lights—Make sure that all lights (exterior and interior) are working properly and that the lenses are clean.
  • Oil Change and Filter—Make sure the oil is fresh and of the right viscosity for warm weather. Use a good quality filter.
  • Radiator, Hoses, and Belts—Make sure there aren’t any cracks or leaks in the radiator and hoses and that you have the correct ratio of coolant and water in the radiator.
  • Tires—Keep the right air pressure in your tires, have them rotated about every 6,000 miles, and check the alignment and balancing. Repair any cuts or holes in the rubber.
  • Brakes—Have your brakes inspected at each oil change. If you start to feel unusual vibrations, hear screeching or squealing, or if the brake pedal feels “mushy,” have everything checked out and repaired as soon as possible.

Pack an Emergency Kit: Always carry a supply of water and snacks, jumper cables, flashlight (with extra batteries), road flares, jack, and spare tire, first aid kit, blanket, and cell phone and charger.
