Elk River Tire & Auto

Many vehicle owners think they know what an automotive service technician does. However, there may be some things they can do that very few people know about. Automotive service technicians are trained to work on traditional mechanical components, such as engines, transmissions, and drive belts. But they must also know how to work on the newer electronic systems that are controlled primarily by computer and electronic components, such as brakes, transmissions, and steering systems. Other electrical features, such as accident-avoidance sensors, are also becoming common. In addition, automotive service technicians need to know how to work on vehicles that run on alternative fuels, such as ethanol and electricity.

Some technicians specialize in a particular type of automotive repair that is more complex than the basic automotive service items, such as:

  • Auto air-conditioning – There are federal and state regulations governing the handling, recycling, and disposal of refrigerants.
  • Brakes – This includes adjustment or replacement of brake rotors, brake pads, calipers, and any other braking component
  • Wheel alignment and tire balancing – In addition to alignment and balancing services, these technicians work on the steering and suspension systems with the use of specialized equipment.
  • Transmissions – Training in computer controls, diagnosis of electrical and hydraulic problems, and other specialized skills are needed to work on complex components in transmissions, such as gear trains, couplings, hydraulic pumps, and other parts in the transmission.
  • Drivability – This includes the understanding of engines, emissions, fuel, electrical, and ignition systems. These technicians are trained to use the onboard diagnostic system and specialized electronic testing equipment to diagnose engine problems.
