Embarrassed by a noisy muffler? Do you smell a strange odor when you start your car? If so, don't put off scheduling an inspection of your vehicle's exhaust system. By the time you notice these signs, there are already existing problems that will require repair.

What are the functions of a vehicle's exhaust system, you ask? A properly working exhaust system releases the toxic gas by-products of internal combustion through the muffler and is vital for the operating efficiency of your vehicle. Today's vehicles are equipped with catalytic converters to convert toxic exhaust into non-toxic water vapor and carbon dioxide, which can create a different set of problems.

In addition to normal wear, there are two common causes of muffler damage to watch out for:

  1. Exhaust Leaks – The muffler is mounted on the underside of your car, exposing it to damaging road conditions, such as salt or sand in the winter. If your muffler is starting to get noisy, it is more than likely that the exhaust system has developed a leak. This not only decreases fuel efficiency but also allows harmful fumes, such as carbon monoxide, to enter the cabin of your car.
  2. Rust – If the water vapor produced by the catalytic converter doesn't have time to fully evaporate or be expelled before parking for the night, rust can start to develop in the exhaust system. This is especially common if you drive a lot of short distances. To compound this problem, sulfur (a by-product of engine emissions), can mix with the water and form a corrosive acid that eats away at the exhaust system.

Important Note: Don't forget about the muffler and exhaust system. Have it inspected at each oil change to make sure there are no leaks or rust! Take care of any problems as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your car or possibly even your health!
