Elk River Tire & Auto

Some parts of the country are now starting to experience some cold wintry days. It’s not too late if you haven’t yet scheduled an auto repair service for an inspection of the systems in your vehicle in preparation for winter! You can have all the necessary auto repair taken care of so that your vehicle is as safe as possible to drive.

Here are the most common auto repair service items that should be taken care of:

  • Tires--Make sure your tires have the correct inflation pressure, that the tread is adequate for winter roads, that the wheels are in proper alignment, and that the tires are rotated. If you will be driving in icy or snowy conditions, you may want to install snow tires.
  • Brakes--Make sure your brakes are functioning properly to meet the challenges of wet and icy roads. If the pedal feels “soft,” you hear squealing or feel vibrations when braking, be sure to schedule a brake service.
  • Car Battery--Your battery will get a lot of use during winter’s dark days. Check the level of battery fluid and clean any corrosive buildup from the terminals and cable clamps. If your battery is more than three years old, make sure it is still holding a good charge.
  • Radiator--The antifreeze/water mixture should be at the correct level as this protects the engine from excessive friction and overheating. It also keeps the radiator from freezing up.
  • Hoses and belts--Inspect for cracking, soft spots or other signs of poor condition.
  • Air filter--Replace the air filter to help keep the motor running smoothly.
  • Engine Oil--Keep clean fresh oil in your car to help it run smoothly and efficiently. Engine fluids lubricate and serve as coolants by helping carry heat away from critical components.
  • Emergency kit--Even if headed out for a short drive on a snowy day, be sure to carry along an emergency kit. This kit should include water, snacks, jumper cables, flashlight (with extra batteries), road flares, first aid kit, blanket, and cell phone and charger.

Your auto repair shop can prepare your vehicle for safe winter driving.
