Elk River Tire & Auto

With the change in seasons, it's time to get your vehicle ready for those cold winter months, starting with an oil change. Even though an oil change is a basic element of car care, it is one of the most important. Many auto shops offer oil change coupons to make regular oil changes affordable for their customers.

There are some basic facts about oil changes that drivers should know. Take a few minutes to become an informed consumer. This will help instill trust in your auto mechanic, rather than try to analyze and take care of everything on your own.

Did you know . . . ?

  • Recycled vs. new -- Today's oil recycling uses the same refining process that is used for crude oil refining, but yielding a high-quality base oil. Many name-brands use the highest quality of recycled oil with a formula for performance that exceeds industry standards.
  • Synthetic motor oils are NOT man-made -- Synthetics use crude oils extracted from the earth. It goes through a synthesis process, using man-made additives in the creation of a final product for extra wear protection and overall higher shear strengths.
  • Conventional -- Conventional oils use natural crude products extracted from the earth which go through a refining process to produce a final product.
  • Additives – Special additives can be good for certain vehicles in regard to seal leaks and oil consumption. But, some additives can be harmful to an engine if used improperly or at the wrong time.
  • All brands are not the same – Different companies use different additives which is what makes each product different from another.
  • Dark colored oil doesn't necessarily mean it's time for an oil change -- Dark oil means that the oil is doing its job to clean internally, using the detergents added to the formulation to clean the inside of the engine.
  • Change the filter at every oil change – To eliminate the risk of the contaminants that are trapped by the filer from re-entering the oil, it is recommended to change the filter at every oil change.
  • Hard driving – Hard driving pertains to high and/or constant changing of rpms, pulling or towing. It can take place on either short or long trips and is also dependent upon the geographic area in which you drive.
  • Conventional, synthetic blend, synthetic, and high mileage motor oils are compatible -- Mixing or switching between types of motor oil is not harmful to your engine.

Tip to Remember: Just a few dollars and a few minutes every 90 days or 3,000 miles will keep your vehicle driving smoothly down the road.
