Elk River Tire & Auto

Most vehicle owners are interested in ways to stretch their vehicle maintenance budget. Here are a few good-sense driving and car maintenance tips to save dollars at the gas pump, plus keep our environment cleaner. Just follow the vehicle maintenance tips below.

10 Fuel Saving Tips to Improve the Vehicle Performance:

  1. Regular Oil Changes. Proper oil viscosity (5w30 over 10w30) can be a 1-2% increase in mileage, or 4-11cents/gallon.
  2. Replace Air Filters. A clogged air filter will cause your engine to work harder and become less fuel efficient. Replacing a dirty air filter can increase your mileage by 10%, or 15cents/gallon.
  3. Avoid Excessive Idling. Turn the engine off if you have to sit more than a minute or two.
  4. Use Cruise Control. Watch the speed limit. Use cruise control on long stretches of road to maintain a steady speed and avoid unnecessary accelerations.
  5. Use lower octane fuel. Buy the lowest octane appropriate for your car, unless your vehicle requires premium.
  6. Don't "top off" the tank. When the nozzle clicks off, stop pumping. Additional gas will slop and seep off so don't waste dollars on gas you won't use.
  7. Make sure the gas cap is tight. Gas will evaporate from your car's tank if it has an escape. A loose, missing, or damaged cap allows gas to evaporate, resulting in a loss of up to 30 gals per year.
  8. Keep Correct Inflation Pressure in Your Tires. Under-inflated tires create more resistance and make your engine work harder, reducing fuel mileage and tire life by as much as 15%. Proper tire inflation can increase mileage up to 3.3%--that's 3 cents/lb. (or a savings of up to 11 cents/gallon).
  9. Keep your engine in tune. A poorly running engine can reduce mileage by 4%. A misfiring spark plug can reduce mileage by 30%.
  10. Eliminate drag. Make sure your wheels are in proper wheel alignment, and roof racks or bicycle racks removed when not being used, as well as heavy items, were taken out of the trunk.
