Elk River Tire & Auto

Do you have a teenager driving back and forth to school and other activities? There is an important step that parents can take to enhance the safety of their teenager behind the wheel. Be sure that the vehicle they drive has had all the recommended vehicle maintenance performed at the appropriate interval. Because teenagers lack driving experience, they may not recognize signs of potential car maintenance problems.

9 Basic Vehicle Maintenance includes the following:

  1. Keep the spark plugs and wires clean of dirt and corrosion. Inefficient spark plugs decrease vehicle performance and fuel mileage.
  2. Make sure all caps (fuel tank, radiator, brake and transmission fluids) are tight and seals are good to keep out water and debris.
  3. Clean cloudy and dirty headlights.
  4. Check the inflation pressure in tires frequently as changes in temperature can make it fluctuate. Properly inflated tires wear more evenly and increase gas mileage. Rotate tires on a regular basis to prevent premature tread wear.
  5. Teach your teenager to keep the interior of your car clean--wash floor mats, windows, interior lights, and dashboard.
  6. Have the air filter checked and changed as necessary to keep the circulating air clean.
  7. Check the level of all critical fluids frequently and top-off as needed.
  8. Replace old wiper blades and make sure the washer fluid reservoir is filled and clean.
  9. Have regular oil changes—the key to a long-lasting car.

If you are a parent or guardian of a teenager, you are the number one influence in molding them into a safe and capable driver. In addition to being a role model for safe driving practices, teach your young driver about good car maintenance, even before they begin to drive.
