With summer over and a lot of people headed back to school, we are offering this short “essay” on engine service to help vehicle owners become more knowledgeable on the subject of engine repair. If your auto mechanic says, “you need an Engine Rebuild,” what does that mean? After studying the subject of engine repair, you will be able to make an informed decision if and/or when you face this test. 

There are two methods of repair when considering an engine rebuild—remanufactured or rebuilt. The decision may be difficult to make, and you will to consider all the pros and cons. Even though you may not understand all the intricate ins and outs of about the type of engine repair, you should be aware of a few things to consider before you make your decision.

Remanufactured vs. Rebuilt?

What is the difference? A remanufactured engine is totally remade to the blueprints and exact specifications of the original and is tested to original equipment standards. It is basically the same as “new” except that is carries the name, remanufactured! However, in the case of a rebuilt engine, the repair is done up to the level of failure for which there was a need of rebuilding. All other components are left intact. Each mechanic will test the rebuilt engine’s performance based on the auto shop’s own particular standards.

Is there a difference in quality?

It is easy to see that the basic difference in the higher quality of a remanufactured engine. All the parts are up to the specification marks and nothing is left untouched. But in the case of a rebuilt engine, only the failed and worn out parts are replaced.

Is there a difference in Cost?

Know what you are paying for!   You can tell that the cost of a rebuild is far less compared to one that is remanufactured. But, as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for!. You may experience more frustration due to the repeated failures of engine parts, which were left untouched at the time of rebuilding. While a rebuild will require more frequent service, you will save time and money in the case of a remanufactured engine. You should also be offered a more comprehensive warranty.

What factors determine my decision?

You can see that your decision depends upon a couple of factors—your driving conditions, and what you can afford. If you drive less, you could go for a less extensive engine repair. However, if you rely on your vehicle for your living, don’t compromise on quality, but go for the remanufactured engine rebuild. It’s worth the extra cost up-front.
