Elk River Tire & Auto

Car axles are extremely important to the safe operation of your car. In fact, they are just as important as brakes and tires. Axles connect to the wheels and bear the weight of your entire vehicle. They also may help drive your vehicle, and in most cars are an integral part of the suspension (struts and shocks) and steering systems.

How Do Car Axles Function?

Most of us think of an axle as a bar between two wheels, like you find on a little red wagon. The truth is, most car axles are far more complex. Today, most axles are split axles, which means the wheel on each side is attached to a separate shaft. This allows independent suspension of the left and right wheels, and therefore a smoother ride. It also permits the left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds as the automobile turns, improving traction and extending tire life. Many cars combine the transmission and the axle to create the transaxle. In rear-wheel vehicles, the engine is connected to a driveshaft which turns the drive axle in the back of the car.

Braking Efficiency: Directly related to shocks and struts!

Your car's suspension system, made up of shock absorbers and struts, not only keeps your car riding smoothly, it keeps your wheels in proper contact with the road. This is vital to safe steering and braking. Worn out shocks & struts increase your braking distance and can result in serious problems? There is certainly a relationship between shocks and struts and brakes—vital to safe steering and braking.

Be sure to reach your destination safely and timely. Don't take a smooth comfortable ride for granted.
