Auto Mechanic Tells-All: 5 Mistakes to Avoid on Your Next Visit to an Auto Shop
There are several common mistakes car owners make when they take their vehicle to an auto mechanic for maintenance. A good car repair can easily turn into a bad one. Here are some inside perspectives offered to help you make the best of your next auto shop visit.
Top 5 Mistakes Car Owners Make:
#1: Failing to communicate properly - The better you can communicate your car's symptoms, the easier it to diagnose and fix the problem. Write down what you hear, feel, see, and smell before you arrive. Keep a log of when, where, and how often, the symptoms occur.
#2: Setting unrealistic expectations - Some customers expect their vehicle maintenance or repairs to be finished within an hour while they wait, not realizing how long the job actually takes, or that other customer may be ahead of them.
#3: Dropping off a dirty vehicle - Most mechanics like to work in a clean environment, and that includes the vehicle they are working on. Clean it before you take it to the shop so it doesn’t have to be cleaned out to get to the failed part, perform a specific repair, or even put it up on a lift!
#4: Making yourself unavailable - If the mechanic is unable to contact you to authorize a repair; your auto service may have to wait until you are contacted. Make sure your contact numbers are correct and that you respond promptly.
#5: Hovering - It is a safety and liability concern if customers enter the service bays to observe. It is also distracting and can actually inhibit the mechanic from doing their job properly.
