You’re on your way to work, running late when all of a sudden the “Check Engine” light illuminates on your dashboard.  Should you drive straight to your auto repair shop or can you go on to work?  Do you need to pull over and call a tow truck?  First of all, don’t panic!  There are several reasons the check engine light may be triggered.

What could cause the check engine light to come on, you ask?  It could just be a loose gas cap. A loose, cracked, or faulty gas cap can cause fuel to evaporate, thus causing your check engine light to come on  So pull over (as soon as it’s safe) and make sure your gas cap is on tight. If this was indeed the trigger, your check engine light should go off within 10 or 20 miles once you’re back on the road.

Aside from a loose gas cap, triggers can include everything from a damaged vacuum hose or ignition coil(s) to a failing catalytic converter to worn out spark plugs.  Most modern cars have an onboard diagnostic system that provides a code identifying the specific issue at hand.  The important concern at this time is to make sure that long-term damage isn’t taking place in your engine and that you aren't compromising the safety of your vehicle.

At the earliest time possible, take your car to a certified mechanic.  Technology is now available that will help your mechanic diagnose the problem easily. Whenever you see the check engine light come on, schedule an engine service for a diagnostic test.

Remember, don’t panic!  Unlike the oil light, for example, a check engine light rarely signals anything disastrous.  Although it’s okay to keep driving for a few more miles or days, the smart thing to do is get your car into your auto shop as soon as possible.  A timely engine service will let you know for sure what’s going on in the engine and avoid a potential costly engine repair.
