When you hear any type of squeaking or squealing sound from your brakes, you should immediately have your brake pads and rotors checked out by a professional brake technician. If your brakes are in poor condition, you may be putting your life and the life of your passengers at risk.  Keeping brakes well-maintained is crucial for any vehicle’s ability to stop safely. When brakes are in excellent working condition, a vehicle operates with better fuel efficiency and safety. Even race car drivers will attest to the fact that it is far more important to have an exceptional braking system than engine power or speed. When brakes respond to a light touch, it means a vehicle is well-maintained and can be driven safely.

A few signs that you need a brake replacement is if your brakes are squealing or grinding when you step on them; your vehicle shutters when you use the brake; or, if the brake pedal goes down to the floor when you step on it.  If you are having one of these problems, it is time for a thorough inspection of your brake pads and rotors to determine if you are in need of a brake replacement.

There are a couple of ways to check a vehicle’s brakes for wear and tear.

The first is to simply examine your brakes visually. When the optimum friction pad depth is well-kept, it leads to a longer vehicle life and operability. If the depth of the pad is less than 1/4 inch, you should consider having your brake pads replaced soon! If the brake pad is less than 1/8 inch, you should have a brake replacement immediately, as the rotors will soon be damaged. If the front brake pads are generating brake dust, it means that the brake rotor is wearing away at the brake lining.

Another way to check your brakes is to listen. If your vehicle is making any kind of squealing or high-pitched noise upon stopping, it is time to consider new brake rotors. If you hear a sound like that of metal scraping metal, you have probably damaged your rotors and it is time for a complete brake replacement.

When it comes to your brake wear and tear, it is much better to be safe than sorry!
