Confused about when to take care of automotive service issues? Troubleshooting problems before they get too big is the key to quality automotive repair! The appropriate diagnosis can eliminate certain issues and pinpoint a specific area that could develop into a bigger problem. For example, if your car has a steering problem, there are a number of things that could be causing the problem. Don't waste your money guessing about automotive repair.

To Find the starting point for the appropriate automotive repair, a good mechanic will do some troubleshooting. The most common problems are:

  • Brakes
  • No-Start or hard-starting
  • Automatic Transmission
  • Suspension System
  • Engine Performance
  • Strange Noises
  • Warning Lights

Evaluate:

Today's automobiles are equipped with an "On Board Diagnostics" (or OBD) system. This system reads thousands of codes from your car's sensors, continuously compiling information. When a problem is detected, a code is sent to trigger the "Check Engine" light. When you see this light illuminate, take your vehicle as soon as possible to an automotive service center to have the code "read" and then determine what the appropriate automotive repair should be.

Make sure that all the recommended automotive service is performed on your vehicle, including:

  • Regular oil change intervals, including replacing the filter.
  • Brake inspection (repair pads, rotors, and calipers as necessary).
  • Make sure all lights are working. Replace any burned-out bulbs.
  • Inspect the windshield for cracks or large pits, check and replace wiper blades and washer fluid as necessary.
  • Inspect the tires for the correct air pressure, depth of tread, or excessive tread wear. Have a tire rotation is recommended. Or, it may be time to purchase new tires.

If issues are caught early on, a minor automotive repair may take care of most problems. Spending time and money on regular automotive service is an investment in the safety and drivability of your vehicle.
