Elk River Tire & Auto

Summer is winding down, but the days are still warm. The summer heat may have taken a toll on your vehicle and it's time to give a little extra attention to your vehicle's cooling system with professional radiator service. Don't let overheating or other problems related to the cooling system interrupt your busy fall schedule. As with any vehicle issue, take care of a small radiator problem before it turns into a major radiator repair.

4 Radiator Service Tips to make it to the finish line of summer:

  1. Check the Coolant Level: Check the level of coolant at least once a month. Also, make sure that the reserve tank levels are where they should be. Ask your auto mechanic for assistance with the correct antifreeze-coolant mix.
  2. Check Caps and Hoses: Check the caps and hoses on the radiator tank and the reserve tank for cracks or other damage. Replace the cap immediately if damaged. Don't forget to inspect the hoses and tubes that lead to the water pump and thermostat for cracks or cuts that may result in antifreeze leaks. Hoses will get brittle over time, so replace them about every three to four years.
  3. Check the Radiator and Overflow Tanks: Every few months, visually check the radiator and overflow tank. Small pinholes and punctures can be easily repaired. However, if ignored, they can become bigger cracks or holes that may be more difficult to repair.
  4. Radiator Flush: Over time, dirt, contaminants and other metal particles that restrict the flow of the antifreeze coolant mixture will build up and antifreeze will lose its effectiveness. Drain and refill the radiator with fresh coolant and water--at least once a year in colder climates, or at least every 18 months to two years in warmer climates.
