Elk River Tire & Auto

An auto repair shop (also referred to as a garage) is a shop where varying types of vehicles are repaired by auto repair technicians.  All auto shops are not the same!  So when looking for auto repair, be sure to ask questions about the repair and services offered.  For most auto repairs, a full-service auto shop that can take care of various types of repair may be your best choice!

Auto Repair Shops Can be divided into several categories, Such as:

  • Auto Parts Store – These stores sell automotive parts to the general public.  Some stores may also maintain service operations.
  • Independently owned and operated Auto Repair Shop -- These shops may also include national chains and franchises including car dealerships. Dealerships are commonly certified by their respective manufacturer to perform warranty and recall repairs. An independent auto repair shop may also achieve certification through manufacturer-sponsored programs, such as hybrid vehicles.
  • Specialty Shop – These shops specialize in certain components and systems such as brakes, mufflers and exhaust, transmissions, tires, electrical, air conditioners, glass repairs and installation, wheel alignment, or specific brands of vehicles. There are also shops that specialize in vehicle modifications and customization.  Specialized shops may have varied facilities for specific jobs or vehicles and technicians and mechanics with varying certifications.
  • Online Shop – These online shops provide doorstep repair services and home delivery of new and used auto parts of the different late model and classic cars whose parts are not widely available in the market.

ASE Certification -- The National Institute For Automotive Service Excellence

The ASE is a professional certification group that certifies auto repair technicians and shops in the U.S. and Canada.  It is an independent, non-profit organization created in 1972 in response to consumers needing to distinguish between incompetent and competent auto repair technicians.  The organization aims to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of repair and service professionals.  The Institute offers certification exams, added with two years of relevant hands-on work experience, to merit certification.  Some forms of formal training will also satisfy part of the two-year work experience requirement. The certified applicant will receive an ASE shoulder insignia, I.D. card, and a wall certificate.
