Elk River Tire & Auto

If your engine breaks down then you will need to seriously contemplate whether you want to have it repaired or just dispose of the vehicle. Engine repair can be that serious as an engine is the single most expensive and critical component of your vehicle.

Here are some issues to consider and questions to ask your mechanic when scheduling engine service for your vehicle:

State of the Engine and Cost of the Engine Service:

The first consideration is the age and condition of your car overall as well as the value of the vehicle if the engine is in good condition. There is a world of difference between having an engine rebuild performed on a fifteen-year-old sedan, which probably will never recover the cost of the engine repair, and a newer luxury vehicle which may quickly recover its value after the repair.

It is also important to find out how serious of a condition the engine is in and how recoverable it is. A minor engine repair is one that you will likely want to have performed while a more major repair will need to be seriously considered before deciding if it is worthwhile to repair it or to scrap the car.

The Length of the Repair and the Chance of Success - If you decide to go ahead with the repairs to your engine, ask the following three questions:

  1. How long will the repair take so that you can make alternative transportation plans? Give the shop a few extra days in case of delays in parts or unexpected problems.
  2. What is the chance of success for the service performed?
  3. Does the auto shop offer a warranty on the parts and/or the work performed?
